i hate my job

We spend an average of 90,000 hours working in our lifetime. In other words, far too much time to be working at a job you hate. We’ll spend about a third of our lives working, and that’s why it’s so important to make sure your career is fulfilling.

In April of this year alone, 4 million people quit their jobs, according to NPR. We’re in the midst of what some are calling The Great Resignation. People are walking off the job because they’re looking for something better. They’re tired of muttering “I hate my job” under their breath and wishing they were somewhere else. In many cases that somewhere else turns out to be franchise ownership.

Know when to walk away (and when to run)

If your workplace is toxic, you might not be muttering “I hate my job,” you might be shouting it from the rooftops. Or worse, you might be too beaten down to say it out loud at all.

Signs of a hostile work environment, from HR Accuity:

  • Discrimination of any kind – age, race, religion, gender, ability, looks
  • Ridicule – being belittled, insulted, condescended to
  • Sexual harassment – in the form of touching but also jokes and insults
  • Intimidation/bullying – being yelled at, threatened or victimized
  • Anything that interferes with your work performance

Sometimes, these actions can lead to lawsuits. And sometimes, you can just walk away and start a whole new career.

How to quit responsibly and start a new venture

A two-week notice is standard across most industries. And even though higher-level executives are often asked to leave immediately, proper etiquette dictates resigning with notice regardless. Quitting responsibly is a matter of common sense: don’t leave a scathing letter, steal a box of office supplies or swap out decaf for regular coffee in the break room. Don’t burn any bridges, because you never know whose path you’ll cross again. The Golden Rule is a good one to follow, because you always feel better if you take the high road anyway.

While we don’t subscribe to the old adage “If you do what you love, you’ll never work another day in your life,” we can assure you there’s something better out there. For the entrepreneurial minded, starting a new business is hard work – but so rewarding, and blissfully free of toxicity. You can’t be toxic or hostile when you’re your own boss. You can work hard and still love what you do. Of course, there are different ways to accomplish that, and the one we present here is franchising. It offers the benefits of business ownership with more support and less risk.

Is franchising for you?

If you’re an experienced manager or leader with an entrepreneurial mind, the answer is very likely yes. Franchising offers the safety net of training and support as well as the framework of a proven business model. It solves the variables that plague so many business owners because the franchisor has already figured out what works and what doesn’t.

It allows you to be your own boss with a built-in network of support, or as we say in franchising, you get to be in business for yourself, not by yourself. The secret is finding the right franchise for your skillset.

With Allegra, for instance, we have found that executives and sales and marketing professionals are a good fit for us. Our franchise opportunity combines the best aspects of a printing franchise and a marketing franchise. We look for franchise candidates who are passionate and value a systems-oriented opportunity – they want the accountability that comes from joining a strong franchise system. Ideally, our franchisees are seeking a strong B2B opportunity that’s highly scalable.
